About This Book
This book is a 60-day preparation system for HSC Modern History, built around the writing and argument skills that separate Band 5 from Band 6.
Your HSC Modern History exam is on the morning of Friday 16 October 2026, one of the first exams on the HSC calendar. At 100 marks across 3 hours and four equal sections, it requires you to sustain strong historical analysis without losing momentum.
The HSC Modern History exam has a structure unlike most other subjects: all four sections are worth exactly 25 marks, alternating between short-answer and extended-response formats. Sections I and IV are short answer (3-4 questions worth 5-15 marks each); Sections II and III are extended responses worth 25 marks each. Crucially, you already know exactly which of your topics are assessed in which sections, making strategic preparation possible from day one.
Where Modern History students most commonly lose marks is in the quality of their argument: they narrate events rather than analyse them, and they fail to link evidence clearly to the question and their overall argument. High-scoring responses don't just include historical evidence. They use it to prove a case.
Over 8 structured weeks, this playbook builds your skills from baseline to final refinement:
- Baseline assessment and exam structure analysis
- Short-answer strategy for Sections I and IV
- Essay construction and argument development for the 25-mark extended responses
- Evidence integration, question analysis, and full-length response practice
